Highschool Exchange

Academic Programs

Why Study Abroad?
A one year exchange may seem out of reach and too expensive for many to even begin to think about it. However, take a moment and think about the priceless value of the memories and experiences gained through a year in another country. Not only are students given the chance to learn another language at a school with others, as well as see how another culture lives, but they will be taking steps toward their future. As the world grows smaller through technology, it has become even more important to be culturally aware and able to present experiences in dealing with diversity. It is not unusual for students to come back from exchange having a better understanding of the world in general and being more able to find their way in the world.

Many exchange students have been happy to call Germany their home; it is a breathtakingly beautiful country with an exciting and diversely modern culture at every turn.

You’ll have in Germany a wide variety of cultural events to attend, ranging from public festivals and sporting events to world renowned art exhibitions, theatre performances, and concerts. You will see fantastic urban architecture, beautiful landscapes and meet people who cherish their environment.

Academic Programs
Since 1969 the CJD arranges student exchange with American public and private schools. The stay usually lasts for one academic year (August/September to June/July) or one semester.
As a student in Germany, you will visit a gymnasium of one of our Youth Village Christophorus Schools, which prepares students for entrance into the German university system. The program has a set of core classes, with electives including foreign languages, math and science, and the classics are also offered. At school you may participate in sports (soccer, tennis, basketball, etc.), the arts (music, theatre,
photography, etc.), computer projects, or other events. Outside of school, most German youths are involved in organizations, such as sport clubs, church, and community education centres.

Each CJD school is represented by a qualified teacher as a personal contact person for the host students.

The students live with CJD host families in the area and attend classes during the week.

Discover Germany
You will hear German being spoken by native speakers and get a real taste of what it is like to live in Germany. Learn about German life, people, and language while you live with a German host family.

Tuition does not include insurance (health- accident and liability insurance), airfare and personal spending money. In case you speak little German, it’s not a problem! CJD will organize a language-course at the beginning of your exchange time in Germany. In this course you will learn the basics very quickly and you will have fun studying in a group with other exchange students. The costs for the course are to consider additionally to the tuition, too.

American students need no Visa to enter Germany for the exchange program.

All students must plan to arrive in Germany 2-3 days before school starts and leave within seven days once school has ended. The CJD will not be responsible for students who arrive earlier or leave later than those dates. In Germany, school usually starts between August and first half of September. You will receive the exact dates with your placement.

Should the participant cancel before a host family placement has been made, a refund will be made by the CJD minus $ 250. Should the student cancel after a host family placement is made, a refund will be made by the CJD minus $ 600.

After arrival, should the student want to leave early, no refund will be made.
